Overview
Requirements for Diploma Certification:
The British Academy of Restorative Dentistry Diploma is a two year course (year 1 is the PG Certificate Course) and the examination is comprised of two sections. To qualify for the Diploma course you must first have successfully completed the Certificate course although there are exemptions to this (please view your desired Diploma course page to see if you have completed the appropriate courses to allow exemptions).
The first section is a written short essay examination and the second section consists of oral examination, case presentation and case defence.
The examination is comprehensive, covering topics such as collecting and assessing patient data, preparing and presenting a patient treatment plan, implementing patient treatment, and maintaining the effectiveness of the dental treatment.
The Diploma examination measures the in-depth knowledge, proficient skills, and abilities of practitioners to provide comprehensive, safe and effective restorative dental care to the public.
Candidates must pass the Part I written examination prior to taking the Part II case presentation portion of the examination.
The Part I Examination is a written examination consisting of 10 written
short answer essay questions; Candidates are given 2 hours for this section.
Candidates are not allowed to bring any electronic devices, bags or other extraneous items into the examination room.
Part II Examination requires the submission of 5 documented Restorative cases for Diploma Board review. The Part II Examination consists of questioning on the submitted case completed by the candidates.
This second component is where the candidate will defend their submitted case. Examiners review the candidates’ cases prior to the oral examination.

Use of additional qualifications
The GDC have confirmed that the additional qualifications can be added onto business cards and letterheads and in advertising and marketing literature. The following statement has been taken from the GDC website:
“We are not currently adding any additional skills or qualifications* to either the dentist or DCP Registers, no matter when they were obtained. This decision was made in October 2007. Since this decision was made we have held consultations in which we sought stakeholders’ views on this issue. This was followed up with further stakeholder workshops covering the issue, and research to determine patients’ views.
Dentists whose additional qualifications were added to the register prior to this decision being taken will retain their listed qualifications in the register until a policy decision has been agreed by the Council.
*Qualifications that are not recognised for registration
